Funding

Theatre by the Lake is exceptional amongst Regional Producing Theatres in that it generates over 80% of its annual turnover through income earned from ticket sales and other trading activities.  Most regional theatres are able to earn only around 50% of their income each year; the other half is derived from public funding and other non-earned income.

Theatre by the Lake is able to offer a wide-ranging programme of over 600 performances each year, as well as an extensive programme of education, outreach and participation activities, particularly for young people, with subsidy far lower than comparable theatres.  However, none of this would be possible without the support of regular annual funding from Arts Council England, Cumbria County Council, Allerdale Borough Council and Keswick Town Council.

Project funding supports specific activities.  Theatre by the Lake's current capital development to extend the Studio theatre, the stalls bar and the ground floor foyers has been supported in part by the regular annual funders (see above) and also by the European Regional Development Fund through Cumbria Vision, Friends of Theatre by the Lake, Arts Council Grants for the Arts, Northern Rock Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Friends of Theatre by the Lake offer regular donations to the theatre, some for specific projects and activities and some towards the overall programme of work.  In addition, the theatre receives support from Business Sponsors and Partners (currently Jennings Brewery, Invest in Cumbria, Cumberland Building Society, Cumbria County Council and Baines Wilson) and through other charitable and private donations.
